This calculator is based on information provided by AAA in their 2008 edition of "Your Driving Costs" brochure. AAA analyzes driving costs each year and covers vehicles equipped with standard and optional accessories including automatic transmission, air conditioning, power steering, power disc brakes, AM/FM stereo, driver and passenger side air bags, anti-lock brakes, cruise control, tilt steering wheel, tinted glass, emission equipment and rear-window defogger. All figures reflect the average cost of operating a vehicle primarily in stop-and-go driving conditions.

Included in the average cost is Cost of Ownership which includes, taxes, depreciation, finance charges, registration, insurance and license fees; and Operating Costs which include gas, oil maintenance and tires and are incurred for each mile you drive.

Information for SUVs and Minivans have been added for comparison.

Calculate Your Potential Savings
To use the calculator, enter the distance you drive; the number of days per month you work; the amount of fuel you vehicle burns per mile; the cost per gallon for that fuel; and and the cost of parking. The calculator will then figure out how much you spend every month and every year.

A. How far, in miles, is your roundtrip to and from work each day?
B. How many days per month do you normally work? (21 days is average for 40/hour, non-compressed week)
C. How many miles per gallon does your automobile average?
D. How much per gallon do you normally pay for gasoline?
E. What is your cost per mile for oil, maintenance and tires?*
F. What is your cost per mile for financing, insurance, taxes and depreciation?*
G. How much do you pay for monthly parking?

Your estimated Monthly cost of commuting is
---------
Your estimated Yearly cost of commuting is

* Combining these two will give you the national average for vehicles that travel 15,000 miles per year.
