POSITION SUMMARY:

 Under direction of the Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor, the Electronic Systems Technician serves as the department technical expert regarding the installation, configuration, and repair and maintenance of electronic equipment on Skagit Transit vehicles. JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Performs installation, configuration, repair and preventative maintenance of electronic equipment in or on vehicles. This includes video surveillance, communication, mobile data, revenue collection and other similar transit electronic systems and equipment. Follows established standards and equipment or component manufacturer’s maintenance-check recommendations and procedures.
  2. In coordination with the Lead Mechanic and other staff:
  3. Organizes work tasks relating to installing or maintaining electronic technology systems.
  4. Develops specifications, documentation, maintenance procedures and training material regarding electronic technology systems.
  5. Delivers training regarding electronic technology systems to appropriate Skagit Transit staff.
  6. Maintains maintenance diagnostic software, fleet management software, and other related systems.
  7. Scans vehicles and pulls trouble codes from vehicles to support mechanics in vehicle repair.
  8. Works with the Information Technology Department regarding radio communications systems, on-board video systems, and fare collection systems to help with the decision-making process regarding electronic system requirements, selection, configuration, implementation and repair.

  2. Participates in the capital replacement program by performing acceptance inspections, make-ready/sale and warranty administration.
  3. Performs advanced troubleshooting of components using common and specialized tools, measuring instruments and testing equipment.
  4. Maintains accurate records and work orders on equipment repairs including preventive maintenance, repairs and modifications of equipment.
  5. Coordinates with other maintenance staff to document and track warranty returns for electronic system components.
  6. In the absence of the parts technician, uses the computerized inventory system to locate required repair parts and makes the appropriate entries into the inventory system.
  7. Performs service calls and bus swaps, as necessary.
  8. Maintains strong relationships with other departments and external business partners.
  9. Maintains a safe, clean and orderly work area.
  10. Maintains 100% accountability and serviceability of assigned tools and equipment.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Electronics theory and the use of related diagnostic test equipment, hand tools and calibration equipment in production conditions.
  • Vehicle-based electronic technology systems such as radio, GPS, video surveillance and revenue collection systems, or similar electronic systems of moderate complexity.
  • Intelligent vehicle control systems such as DINEX or other control systems of moderate complexity.
  • Commonly used vehicle system communication protocols such as multiplexing and equipment integration techniques.
  • Knowledge of tools, materials and electronic test equipment and other specialized devices used in the installation, repair and maintenance of vehicle-based electronic systems.
  • Computer related software and computer peripherals.
  • Occupational hazards, PPE, safety precautions and regulations.
  • Computerized vehicle maintenance management systems.

 

ABILITY TO:

  • Distinguish all colors used to identify conductors in multiple pair communications cables.
  • Read, interpret and understand electrical schematics, wiring and digital diagrams to include multiplex ladder charts.
  • Diagnose and resolve technical problems using a structured analytical approach.
  • Apply independent judgment in determining proper action to ensure work is completed to the appropriate quality and standards. 
  • Ability to create documentation within common industry formats as required.  Experience with Microsoft tools such as Outlook, Word, and Excel are required.
  • Ability to accomplish assigned tasks within established timelines, under limited supervision is required.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Work effectively in a team environment with other employees at all levels of the organization.  As well as with members of other affiliated organizations.
  • Utilize computer equipment in order to input work time, update computerized fleet management systems, and carry out other computer-related tasks.
  • Ability to understand and apply Skagit Transit and Departmental policies and procedures.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:

Work hours vary depending upon assignments. Work assignments involve five 8-hour shifts.

Duties are performed primarily inside the maintenance facility in and around heavy-duty transit buses; however, some outside work is required with exposure to all weather types and conditions. The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, dust, fumes, hazardous materials and vibration.

 

Basic to intermediate-level tools and test equipment are typically used to perform the tasks required in this position, including hand tools, and computerized test equipment.  Hybrid bus systems require the ability to perform maintenance and repairs around high-voltage systems, working on roof-top mounted components, and the wearing of fall-arrest equipment. 

 

Education and Experience desired:

  • A minimum of two (2) years technical training in electronic technology, or;
  • A combination of three (3) years technical training and progressive on-the-job training in electronic maintenance with any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job.  Possession of a high school diploma or equivalency (GED) certificate is required.
  • Must possess intermediate computer skills.  Microsoft experience is required.

 

License or Certificates:

  • Valid Washington State driver's license at time of hire and ability to obtain a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements within 90 days of hire and maintain licensing during length of employment.
  • Applicants must have an acceptable driving record and must submit a seven-year driving abstract.
