POSITION SUMMARY:

 

Performs skilled journey level mechanic work in the maintenance and repair of automotive, light, and medium duty transit/paratransit, and heavy transit bus and related equipment. Diagnose malfunctions and accomplish repairs in the shop or in the field as needed. Work involves skilled tasks in the mechanical, electrical/electronic, hydraulic and pneumatic diagnosis, repair and ongoing fleet maintenance of automobiles, buses and related equipment to include onboard fare collection, DVR, communication equipment, next stop announcement and ITS system.


WAGE RANGE – Dependent Upon Experience:

 

  • Level 11: $28.75-$37.11/hr. DOE

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Inspect vehicles for proper operation of lighting, emergency doors, hydraulic lifts and other moving     parts; identify equipment problems and makes adjustments and repairs as required
  • Diagnose equipment failures and malfunctions of fuel, electrical, hydraulic, air, and mechanical systems, drive trains and differentials; repair and replace parts and components
  • Perform periodic maintenance and servicing of vehicles in accordance with established schedules and intervals; change oil, filters and hoses; add fluids; lubricate pertinent moving parts of the chassis; repair and replace brake linings, axle shaft gaskets and wheel hub seals; overhaul valves and motors
  • Perform major equipment repair or replacement of components or integral parts on diesel, propane, and gasoline-powered engines, electronic and hydraulically controlled transmissions, traction motors and heavy-duty drive trains, antilock brake systems, electrical systems, fire-suppression systems and computerized fare boxes
  • Respond to emergency road calls and make field repairs if possible; arrange vehicle transport to shop facilities or contract facilities as applicable to the situation
  • Drive transit vehicles to various locations for equipment change-outs, to perform repairs, or to pick up or deliver parts
  • Identify, locate and order parts; assist in maintaining the tool room and parts/supplies inventory
  • Prepare and maintain detailed vehicle maintenance files and records related to repairs, parts and labor
  • Operate various hand and power tools used in the maintenance and repair of motor vehicles
  • Maintain a clean and orderly shop environment
  • Comply with established health and safety regulations and procedures, including proper handling, storage and disposal of hazardous and toxic materials
  • Communicate with coach operators, dispatchers, vendors, suppliers and staff regarding vehicle repairs and maintenance
  • Maintain current knowledge of repair techniques, technological advances in vehicle equipment and maintenance and applicable safety regulations and requirements
  • Assist vehicle servicer and facility maintenance personnel with vehicle cleaning and facility maintenance as necessary
  • Regular, reliable, and punctual attendance is required
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provide the knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the job. A typical way to meet this requirement would be:

 

  • Vocational training in vehicle maintenance and repair
  • 2 years of journey-level experience as a diesel fleet mechanic which includes the repair and maintenance of medium to heavy duty trucks or buses
  • Prior experience with wheelchair lift, air, electrical and electronic systems as found on transit coaches preferred
  • Valid Washington State Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
  • Maintain acceptable driving record
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a 609 A/C certification within 90 days of employment
