Skagit Transit Pilots Bus Service on Guemes Island

BURLINGTON, WA May 28, 2025: Skagit Transit will pilot reservation-based bus service on Guemes Island upon the return of the vehicle ferry. The service will operate Monday through Saturday, providing access to jobs and community services for up to six months.  Monday-Friday the bus will travel from Anacortes to Guemes Island on the 6:30 a.m. ferry and return to Anacortes on the 5:30 p.m. ferry. On Saturdays, the bus will travel from Anacortes to Guemes Island on the 8:00 a.m. ferry and return to Anacortes on the 5:30 p.m. ferry. There will be no bus service on Sunday.

Ridership will be evaluated throughout the pilot to assess its success. Lower-than-expected ridership may lead to early termination of the pilot. The level of ridership will also help determine whether Skagit Transit will consider permanent service on the island. All Skagit Transit rider rules apply to this service. For a list of these rules, please visit our website.

This is a reservation-based service, which means all pickup and drop offs must be scheduled. Rides must be scheduled at least one hour in advance. When rides are not scheduled, the bus will hold at the Guemes Island Ferry Terminal. To schedule a ride, call Skagit Transit at 360-757-4433, press 2, and ask for Guemes Dispatch. This service will operate on most major roads on Guemes Island. A map of accessible roads is available here: Guemes Island Pilot Service

This bus service will be open to the public. Riders will be required to pay Skagit Transit’s standard fare: $1.00 for regular fare and $0.50 for reduced fare (available to individuals with disabilities and those aged 65 and older). Youth aged 18 and under ride free on all Skagit Transit services. Fares can be paid in cash or through Umo, Skagit Transit’s electronic fare payment system.

When traveling from Anacortes to Guemes, ferry fare is at the rider’s expense whether riding-on or walking-on the ferry.  For a full breakdown of ferry fares please visit  www.skagitcounty.net/departments/publicworksferry
