Rules for Riders

For the benefit and safety of everyone who uses Skagit Transit buses and Skagit Station, we ask that you follow these rules:

1. Behavior which disturbs others, is unsafe, or causes damage is not allowed on Skagit Transit property or buses. Examples of behavior that will not be allowed include profanity, horseplay, excessive noise, skateboarding and littering.
2. Loitering and soliciting are not permitted on Skagit Transit property or buses. You are expected to take the next connecting bus to your destination.
3. You must wear shoes and shirts to board a Skagit Transit bus or enter Skagit Station.
4. You may not eat or drink on the bus. Any food or drink you bring on the bus must be spill proof. 
5. You may not smoke inside Skagit Station or on the bus.
6. You may listen to your radio on the bus at low volume if you use earphones so the driver and other customers are not disturbed.
7. Children under the age of 8 must be accompanied by a responsible passenger.
8. Skagit Transit allows all ADA service animals access to our property and buses. You may also transport a small domestic pet, but only if it is confined in an approved animal carrier.
9. You may bring on board the bus only those packages which you can carry in one trip up the steps (DAR passenger limit is 3 bags). You must keep strollers collapsed on the bus and grocery carts out of the walkways so others will not trip over them (No child may ride in a stroller while bus is in motion). You may not bring hazardous items (weapons, car batteries or gasoline or other like items) on Skagit Transit property or buses.
10. Drivers are happy to answer your questions. However, for safety reasons, you should not talk to the driver unless it is necessary when the bus is in motion. Passengers must stand behind the yellow line when the bus is in motion.
11. You may not board the bus at Skagit Station if the driver is not present.
12. If you fail to follow these rules, or any instructions from Skagit Transit personnel, you may be denied the privilege of using Skagit Transit property and buses.

Safe Riding Tips –

The Always

• Stand back from the curb until the bus makes a complete stop.
• Have your fare ready so you can use the handrails for support.
• Use the handrails when boarding, riding and departing the bus.
• Take a seat as soon as possible after boarding the bus.
• Stay in your seat while the bus is in motion.
• Keep your head, hands and arms inside of the bus.
• Be good neighbors...don't distract the driver or other passengers with unnecessary conversation, yelling or causing commotion on the bus.
• Signal that you would like to get off one block in advance of your stop and remain seated until the bus comes to a complete stop.
• If your bike is on the bus, say to the driver, "Please wait for me to take my bike off the rack," when you get off.
• Watch your step when you get on and off the bus...especially at night and in rainy weather.
• Assist small children on and off the steps.
• After you get off the bus, stand back and wait for it to leave before crossing the street.
• Please be ready to board the bus when it is time to depart.  Drivers are not allowed to stop the bus after they have departed their gate at transfer facilities.

The Nevers

• Never stand in the street when buses or other vehicles are approaching.
• Never run after or hit the side of a moving bus.
• Never allow small children to stand on the seat while riding the bus.
• Never stand or sit in any of the bus stairwells.
• Never jump from the curb to the bus or from the bus to the curb.
• Never enter the street in front of or directly behind a stopped bus. Make sure traffic can see you.
